^_^ this is so well done! Isn't it great to look back at your art work and see you are progressing? Maybe some shading in the shoulders would help bring it out even more b/c you have done such an exceptional job on the face, with shading and details that the shoulders kind of pale in comparison. Well done! Love the expression you have captured.

Funkatronic knee, yeah. The rest is very competently rendered though. I wish I could see the original photo so I could get an idea where the knee went wrong.

Nice digipainting, Hendi.

Really like the muted "opaque watercolor" feel of this. I would have liked to have seen the hi-lites in the hair more refined and flowing, but that is being a bit picky.

The pattern on the dress is nicely done.

Thx DigitalDust. This was a story for the hair. When I started this paint, it was considered as a practising piece, and I tried to do everything in oil pastel in Painter 8, therefore I have done the hair part in oil pastel at the beginning. However, when I tried to use oil pastel to paint the face, I just found out it is not the effect I am satisfied with. So I changed my mind to use airbrush, it worked very fine and I love the smooth feel, because I always think the pretty girl should have a smooth skin, and I wanted my favourite idol to be pretty in my painting as what she really is. So that is why the hair is a bit turning down for the whole painting, and i was too lazy to paint it all over again by airbrush... hahaha... but anyway, overall is not bad though.

I think the body, specially the skin, needs a bit more work, it looks as cutouts, and both knees look really strange, as if they didn`t have bones... It`s obvious you have put more effort in her face, but I don`t blame you ;) I could be talking about Japanese Idols all day long, ha ha ha! (By the way, you have captured her likeness very well, points for that!)

very nice..i like it a lot
some critique..agree something wrong with the knee and i wish there more more tone values in her skin but somehow the skin still looks nice..also if the background color was different it would look better..just so the skin color won't be so close to the background..other than that, great job and i'm glad u left the hair like that, because it looks really good the way it is now

the skin tone looks really nice. but cud u hav more variation in value. i know that is how the skin is supposed to look. the tonal value is very accurate and u hav a nice style. but i think it was be even more beneficial if u suggessted more dept by more constrast of skin color..

Well, aren't you special. You can copy a photograph! Congratulations. Now try doing something original. +0 for wasting your own time and possible copyright infringement. Or did you purchase the rights to the photo? :p

Avatar CityRose

 04/06/04 @105

I believe that using photo reference for figure painting is a great way to learn how to paint photorealistically. If this was created using various photos for reference, and her pose and whatnot were invented, then I don't think there'll be copyright infringements. If this is refered from just one photo, there should be a link posted back to the site, or info regarding where the ref came from.

+8 because this is a beautiful piece of work. Skin tones are great in my opinion, and the dress is well done. I don't know who this girl is, but she's obviously very pretty, and you've captured this well. I would have voted +9, if the knees were a little better (people have already touched on this), and a suggestion of a background, or at least a suggestion of the surface she's sitting on.

Overall, excellent work! Luv it.

Avatar geckzilla

 04/06/04 @270

Yes, I did find the photo before posting that. And yes, it is from one photo... and yes, it is a direct copy with only the background removed. As far as I'm concerned the photo was a better and more complete and original work of art.

I'm not linking to it because it seems too much like "in your face sucker, I found your ref!" attitude. That's not it. I'm just bored to tears with art like this and felt like expressing it.

I believe this is the original photo: http://iss.hp.infoseek.co.jp/image/9907/tanaka_rena02.jpg

The knee looks truly strange - even on the photo, so this is the case where you perhaps shouldn't follow the photo and do it yourself :) But, IMHO, she looks more pretty here than on the original photograph :) Keep on!

I find these kinds of digital paintings pretty weak. I have a huge problem with digital artists painting over pictures and at the same time not really learning or taking the "reference" of said material to learn from.

I think if you're doing this for personal reasons or for experiments with skintones or to learn lighting, that's fine. My problem, is when this type of stuff gets posted here or in any other forum with the intent of "original art" is when i think it is a problem. I think as a note to the admins. I think there should be an option that these "types" of pieces should be accompanied by the original photo that they painted over instead of making them sound like original pieces. I hope I dont sound too bitter here because im not. Ther are many very talented artists here that post amazing original work.

I just feel that digital pieces like this shouldnt come off as original. In relation to that, I say keep learning from photos or still life as much as possible. We all do and should.

Good luck on your experimental pieces.

Bleh...I knew this one was going to make #1...it's what the mindless masses like, and will unfortunately never EVER get tired of. Oh well.

As far as the actual "painting" goes...I'm not really feeling it. The lack of a background is disturbing, and the character is rather flatly rendered.

Hello everyone, I went down to london these days, I didn't know something serious about copyright happened here. First of all, I admit I took the photo of Rena Tanaka originally photographed by Gen Ben Hao Shen (it's just a similar sound like name, because I am not able to type his Japanese name here). I thought I am allowed to post not 100% original work here, because i saw somebody did it before, but I appologize for not saying where the original photo come from, I appologize to the original photographer (please understand the difficulty get the permission from him) and you guys & girls who don't like the un-original art work.

Well, personally, I did mentioned it is just a practice work, I didn't mean to present this as an originally work, truly sorry that I forgot to mention it is not original, it was my fault that i made such a terrible mistake. For overall, you may think this is just a boring copy or even rubbish, but if you look at the eyes, the hair, the face, the lip, even the flowers on the clothes carefully, they are not exactly the same. And please do Not forget the resolution of the original photo(the one i have is just about 600*800) is so low, and my work is about 3000*4500, how the hell all the clear details came from? Ok, I took the idea of how things should be looked like from the photo, but the Way I drew was what I thought the things they should be presented, and the Way I drew is mine, that is the creativity of my work. Although taking photo as a reference, different artists will draw the different works, they will have different presentations of what they see & think from the original photo. If I just reproduced the photo to a painting in my own way, what is wrong with it? It also need to think, it also need creativity, just different way of how to present a photo in a different way. Think about live drawing of a model, isn't it similar to photo? it's just the same model, you just draw what you see, but different people may use different ways to draw it, can you consider live drawing is a boring copy? will you consider about the copyright of what you see in living drawing? when you do live drawing of a tree in nature, will you ask for the permission from the tree?

Maybe you will just think the way i reproduced that photo is boring and rubbish, i am not enforcing you to think it is a 100% creative & original art work, I am not enforcing you to like it. For God's Sake, it is just a fan art of Rena Tanaka, take it easy! I don't get money for doing that, just a practice painting, ok!

This probably isnt what you expect to hear, but you probably should have just used a camera and saved yourself alot of work. I agree, Making your work look just like a photo requires tremendous skill, but that is just what it is, work. Art is supposed to be a means of expression, not a way to show off how well you can render.

It is obvious to me that you have great skill, and with a little work and creativity you could create some remarkable art in less than half the time it took you to do this piece.

Dont be too worried about screwing up or making less than perfect work. That is part of the process.

I dont have a problem with you copying someone elses work, I know plenty of people who learn to paint by copying the old masters. The problem that I have is with trying to faithfully reproduce a photograph, which isnt what art is about at all. If you want a photo, get a camera, if you want a painting, get a brush, you cant mix the two.

So just try to understand. I am not saying that you lack talent, you have tremendous talent. I am only saying that you should use that talent to create ART.

Thank you, I totally understand what you and other great artists told me, as what I said in my previous post, I am not trying to show off my skills of copying photo, I am not cheating to get higher scores, it is just a practice work. I didn't just paint over a photo, if i just painted over, i think it would not take me that long to finish it. However, the really appologies are for forgetting to post the photo ref link in time and it was unfair to others of their scores. It really was a very terrible mistake I had ever made, so please forgive me about that, I really really really didn't mean it.

This is the only not original work i posted here, and I am quite new here, I am sorry that I didn't really know all the posting rules here. HAVE A LOOK MY OTHER WORKS, they are all original works, I DO CREATE ART, please do not judge me by just one unoriginal work.

I was in holiday in london, so I didn't know the copyright problem getting so serious because I didn't get online for a few days. So now please forgive me for the copyright problem, and just critisize this painting only, not the copyright again please! Many thanks :)

Besides, althought I used photo ref, it is a painting, not a photo. Anyway, I do appreciate your critiques, it helps a lot for improving my skills. I will prove my creativity to you in my next original art work, really sorry for this one.

It doesn't sound like your intentions were bad., but you have to be very careful and thoughtful with your references since visual artists copyrights are commonly trampled on. But I wouldn't short change your abilitiy to work in a phot realistic way. Evn though it is "copying" a photo, your execution is excellent and you brought the girl to life thru your painting. I think somebody else recommended taking your own photos. I agree. I think you have uncommon skill in this direction and using your own references eliminates all of this discussion.

Great job, the face, hair, facial expression, dress....are VERY well done, in my opinion. However...I think (like a lot of other ppl have already pointed out), the knee is a little awkward, as well as her left shoulder...it looks a little small in comparison ...maybe add more shades (to her body's skin tone in general)..other than that, I think it's a marvelous piece of work. You really did manage to paint her beautifully.
